Bringing Tact Back

Remember when I used to be tactful? It was a long time ago, so you may not remember unless you have known me for a very long time— like since birth.

Anyway, I'm bringing tact back. It seems that my workplace requires us to hold back our true thoughts and replace them with subtle hints, micro aggressions and passive aggressive statements. Not that this can't be fun too, but it's pretty exhausting, and I would much rather just say what I'm thinking and leave it at that.

Here are a few recent examples of me using tact:

What I wanted to say:

  • "Please don't speak, your breath smells like decomposing corpses. Every time you to talk to me, I throw up in my mouth a little." *I walk away sniffing at my clothes and hair, afraid the smell is lingering.                           .
  • "They're foreign, they're not deaf or stupid."

What I actually said:

  • *Pretend to wipe nose, but really trying to block out the smell. Responding to all statements with, "What is that?" Point to the opposite wall then turn my chair and start talking to someone else. If there is no one else, then start typing an email to someone, anyone.
  • "I noticed you were speaking quite loud and repeating yourself. Perhaps I should answer their questions—my hearing is better."

I'm not sure how long it will last, but I'm working on it. Do you have any examples of when you brought the tact back even though you really wanted to speak your mind?
